French is a beautiful language, and is a very popular choice for people who want to learn a second language. As such, there are a great number of resources at your disposal.
The Necessities
French in Action: This video series developed by Yale University is available completely free of charge on Learner.org. It is done in a soap opera style and purports to get you through the equivalent of two years college French. The series is fun to watch and really does help jumpstart your French. Also available are a workbook, textbook and audiotapes. If you can find these at your local library you will be well on your way to intermediate competency in French.
Foreign Service Institute French Course: While not as good as the Spanish course, this free program will improve your French immensely. The program is quite boring, but the dedicated student will gain through knowledge of French. If you can push yourself through the program, you will definitely find it to be worthwhile.
Phonetique: The French are picky about pronunciation, and if they hear a strong accent they will often switch to English. This website will greatly improve your pronunciation, and you can learn the international phonetic alphabet while you are at it.
See the Italian page for information on Michel Thomas and Pimsleur. These are still good resources; however, with so many free web resources you should definitely think twice about buying them full price.
